Farming with care at Halls Family Dairy

Farming with care sits at the heart of everything we do here at Halls Family Dairy. It’s how we look after our land, our beautiful cows, and the people who will farm here after us.

All of our animals are raised and cared for on the farm from birth. Calves are fed their mother’s colostrum and reared by hand in our calf nursery before joining the herd. From the beginning, they are handled quietly and consistently so they grow into calm, healthy animals.

Our cows are grass-fed and spend their days grazing the pastures that surround the farm. We don’t use added hormones and keep antibiotics to an absolute minimum. The wellbeing of the herd always comes first. When cows are calm and content, they produce the kind of milk that makes good cheese.

Looking after the pasture is just as important as caring for the animals. Our soils are rich and capable of growing lush, nutrient-dense grass, and we work hard to maintain the natural balance of the land. We use minimal herbicides and no pesticides, always aiming to farm in a way that respects the environment we rely on.

Over the years we’ve made practical improvements to reduce our impact on the land. We invested more than $200,000 in upgrading our irrigation system, which has allowed us to reduce water use by around 50 percent. We’ve also reduced glyphosate use by 99 percent and introduced longer-life pasture varieties that help protect soil structure and reduce erosion.

We also use regenerative stock rotations across the farm. Moving the herd carefully through the pasture improves soil health, strengthens the grass, and helps maintain a balanced environment for both animals and land.

For us, these choices aren’t about trends or labels. They’re simply about doing the work properly and caring for a place that has supported our family for generations. If we farm well today, the land will still be here — healthy and productive — for the next generation to continue the work.
